These nice illustrated postcards are known as "write away" postcards... They all start by a few printed words, like this very rugby "I will try..." above - or "Sorry, I missed...", "Sorry, I couln't get away" below - and let you continue to write a lazy few words...
These cards had travelled a lot... the card above had travelled from Stellenbosch to London via Cape Town in 1905... the other one below, written in Italian, from London to Firenze in Toscany in 1902...
Before 1903, it was not allowed to write correspondance on the back of a postcard, but the address only... another reason to write a few words on the front... and to leave room for nice calligraphy on the back...
Bonus : two cards from the same series... as new as in 1900... ;)
