Rugby clips from the 30s - Massey University (NZ)

I have found those video clips on the web, published by Massey University ( Palmerston North, north of Wellington, New Zealand) on the occasion of their 75 years jubilee.

Nice footages (no sound on the second one)... a real piece of memorabilia !

Credit to Massey University (I hope that they won't mind my posting...)

PS : if you have old rugby footages to share... please drop me a mail !

Early XXth century rugby trade card advertising for a retailer (stupidely) named "Le Jambon" ("the Ham") ...

XIXth century rugby advertising print

"Strength and Staying Power : Cadbury's Cocoa" !

A fine, large, full page, advertising print with a rugby theme... taken from UK magazine The Graphic, November 1888.

Cadbury's motto explains that its cocoa "sustains against fatigue, increases muscular strength, gives physical endurance and staying power"... better than creatine, indeed !!

Early XXth century Russian rugby postcard

The ball is oval... the posts are high... yes, it's rugby !

For what I can understand with my poor Russian, caption reads something like "So does chocolate... after sport time"

(I welcome all Russian speaking readers if they want to propose a better translation....)

Edited 26 nov : RuggerUA from Kiev has proposed an accurate transalation "How to eat chocolate... during sports". Check his comment below for more... thanks a lot, and say hello to Ukraina !

France won the "VI Nations" : let's have a drink !

France defeated Wales yesterday and set for VI nations glory...!

I am not going to comment the match. Let just say that the Red Devils proved convincing rugby while the Frenchies were quite lucky...

French secret recipe for luck ? a glass a red wine straight out of the barrel... ! As per the great cover page from French magazine "Le Petit Journal" dated 1930... caption reads "LE BON VIN DE FRANCE PORTE CHANCE - L'équipe française de rugby se prépare à battre l'équipe d'Irlande en trinquant avec du vin apporté de chez nous" (*)

Actually a dark period for French rugby... strong team on the pitch, but a social context exacerbing violence and chauvinism around rugby... the following year (1931), the International Board will ban France from all competitions... untill 1947...

(*) approximate translation : THE GOOD WINE FROM FRANCE BRINGS LUCK - the French rugby team getting prepared to defeat the Irish team by drinking wine brought from home

Barbarians v All Blacks 1973 (J.Bevan)

Third and last video clip of this famous match won 23-11 by the Barbarians...

Of course, rugby fans remember of the fantastic first try of this match by Gareth Edwards (video here) ...

Actually the BaBaas did score three tries that day (to two to the Blacks, both of them scored by "tiny" winger Grant Batty)... the last one by JPR Williams (video here) shows great handling and speed... and I am displaying here the second try by John Bevan... possibly less "glamour" but worth to be published !

Twickenham from plane, again...

Another Fougasse print (another kind gift from John  "ovalballs" ...) from Punch magazine.

Caption reads: " Soccer fans affirm that Ruggers' dull to look at...
they can't have seen our annual start-of-the-season Whites vs Colours"

Twickenham from plane

A print by Fougasse in Punch Magazine, November 1931.

Caption reads: "All the same, you know, those aeroplanes that fly over Twickenham must get rather a jolly view of the Game"

(it's a repost from last year, but I really like this print...)

"The Crunch" : from 1906 to 2006...

We are going to celebrate tomorrow 100 years of France - England games... !

This is a press coverage of the first "France - England" of history, on March 22 1906, in Paris (Parc des Princes)

This is only the second official game of the "Equipe de France", a couple of months after having met Gallagher's All Blacks. As Froggies were far from being ridiculous on that occasion (France scored two tries, ie more than England + Scotland + Ireland together during their tests matches against the same Blacks...), the International Board agreed on French proposal to have an annual game ... the "V nations Tournament" started... (actually, France first played Wales in 1908 and Ireland in 1909. Finally in 1910 they played Scotland...)

A few words about the referees :

Regular readers of this blog would have recognized former Stade Français captain Louis Dedet, one of my favorite "characters" of French rugby history... I have already blogged about him here, there and there and there again...

The line referee is Mr Cyril Rutherford, a former RCF player (and later Secretary for International Affairs at the "Federation Francaise de Rugby") who did a lot to introduce French rugby to his fellows from the International Board

And a few words about the match itself :

Final score 8 - 35 (2 tries to 9...) for England... all the stats are here (thanks scrum.com)

Interestingly, there were three foreigners in the French side, an American (Allan Muhr from Stade Français who scored the first try of France in the history of the Tournament...), an Englishman (William Crichton) and a Welshman (Ernest Lewis... his only cap...)

On the French side, let's name Marcel Communeau (check this previous post), Emile Lesieur (famous sprinter and future President of Stade Français... great friend of Roland Garros... who scored the second try for the Frenchies), Gaston Lane (RCF, captain of the team)...

If you want to read or download this article (in French) from La Vie Au Grand Air, you will find a better resolution copy on my Flickr.

France_magne_120206 edited 12/3 : YES ! 31-6... nice way to celebrate this anniversary (as Jacques says in his comment...). If I am not wrong, +25 is the largest win of France against England ever....

"Football colours of our Public Schools"

I have just received this fantastic rugby print from my friend John (now expatriated in Dubaï...)

This print comes from Boys' Own Magazine (no date, but c1900) and shows the jerseys and caps of allmost each and every Public Scools rugby teams in England (90 rugby "colours" actually).

This is only a zoom as the full print is 1 meter long or so... !

I am going to frame it... you'll be able to see it in my office soon !

PS : I allready had a similar print from the same magazine issued in the 20s... but far smaller (only 44 "colours"...)

1898 : Ireland b. England 9-6 in Richmond....

Since I opened this website a year ago, I regularly receive kind mails asking for this or that about the rugby stuff I am displaying...

Interactivity is a great thing (BTW, dear readers, please lease more comments !...) and I really like the idea of sharing what I like with other people everywhere around the world ... (OK, I agree, it sounds like boy scout litterature... but it's true...)

This morning, I received a short mail from New Zealand from a lady who landed here after googling for Louis Magee, possibly the most prominent Irish rugby player in the 1900s. Incidentally, Louis Magee was her grandfather... !

It also happens that I have just puchased this old rugby print, taken from The Graphic dated Feb.1898, showing both Irish and English teams before their yearly match, here in Richmond... final score 9-6 for Ireland... and a winning try scored by Magee...

Daire, I hope that you like this print as well...

Stats lovers will find the stats of match here, and Magee's stats there...

PS : this English team was captained by JF Byrne of Moseley... who was also portrayed in a postcard by the same artist...

Haka 1905 vs Haka 2005...

This is an old newspaper photography (credit to Wes' excellent website...) showing the Gallaher boys performing the Haka in 1905.

It seems that these gentlemen take it with a smile... not so serious indeed...

Maybe an historian of All Blacks rugby (Sean ?) could explain the evolution, but here is a video of the "new" 2005 Haka (during the TriSeries against South Africa)... brrr.... I don't like very much this (faint ?) aggressivity...

Rugby is a sport... a tough and demanding sport, but only a sport... here is my kind reminder... click on the pic...

PS (March 3) : Sean Fitzpatick's answer in the New Zealand Herald (november 2005) - "Haka aimed at All Blacks, not rivals" (via Wes)

Barbarians v All Blacks 1973 (JPR Williams)

To follow up with one of my previous posts, here is JPR Williams to score another great try for the Babaas in this famous test in 1973...

but no less than seven missed tackled from the Blacks... no exactly their standards...
